1st day
8 hour shift. Shadow my nurse. 5 patients. 4 surgery patients (abdomen, hip, knee, & knee). 1 medical patient. 3 stable patients. 1 confused (alzheimer’s) patient. 1 autistic patient (PICA).
8 hours was not enough. It was super busy. I think I was on my feet for 7 hours. The time that I was sitting was only during my breakfast break, lunch break, and documenting. My nurse and I were basically running around ‘coz our patients need us. 1 patient was very agitated, 1 was with a demanding family, 1 was going in and out of the washroom, 1 was climbing out of bed, and the last one, God bless her, she was just there reading her book.
And that’s how you welcome a student on the floor. LOL
It was a great floor (Surgery). I love surgery especially orthopedic! My problem was I have no idea if I can handle 4 or 5 patients at once, but surprisingly, even though I didn’t give meds, I actually remembered what to do for our 5 patients. That’s a good start right?
I’m on graveyard (7 pm - 7 am) shift tomorrow and this Sunday. Actually, most of my shift is graveyard. Lord help me! I can do this! Wish me luck! :D
